When to renew your residence permit

You must apply for renewal:

  • at least 60 days before expiration,
  • and no later than 60 days after it expires.

You can apply through the post office using the yellow kit, or directly at the Questura depending on your permit type (for instance, family or protection reasons).

📌 Important: if you exceed 60 days, your permit is formally expired and can’t be renewed through the standard process.

⚠️ What happens after 60 days

If more than 60 days pass, the Questura may refuse renewal and start expulsion procedures.
However, Italian law allows you to submit a special late renewal petition, provided you have valid reasons, such as:

  • illness or hospitalization,
  • serious family matters,
  • missing or delayed documents,
  • financial or language difficulties,
  • force majeure (pandemic, natural disaster, etc.).

How the special petition works

In such cases, Future Italian handles the situation through its licensed immigration lawyers.
The lawyer prepares a formal petition to the Questura (known as istanza di rinnovo tardivo), explaining the delay and attaching all supporting evidence: medical certificates, travel tickets, missing papers, sworn statements.

This legal request allows you to recover your legal status and obtain a new valid residence permit. ✅

What Future Italian does for you

Our legal team will:

  1. Evaluate your case and confirm eligibility for a late renewal.
  2. Draft and submit the formal petition to your local Questura.

Everything is done quickly, safely and fully online. 💻
